The forerunner of Cherilea Toys was the company Johillco. After the Second World War, in 1948, Johillco's chief designer Wilfred Cherrington left the company and started his own business with a Mr. Leaver in Blackpool. The name Cherilea was a combination of their surnames.

The early figures are one piece and about 54mm tall, the newer ones are stick figures with more details and a little bigger. Compared to other stick figures, the Cherilea figures are not very detailed and sometimes with strange proportions.
